About Cathy McGregor
Basically a self-taught artist, my interest in art began when I was five years old. I would spend quiet hours pursuing my passion in drawing, color and painting. However, my formal artistic career did not begin until the summer of 2005, when I picked up a paintbrush and started experimenting in acrylics. Since that time, I continued to learn and expand my knowledge in art. An avid learner, I've spent many hours studying the works, techniques, and styles of other artists by observation and/or by reading books, pouring through magazines and watching videos. I also attended art classes at Jackson State Community College and University of Memphis.
Having tried and become accustomed to a variety of mediums, I have found that I favor acrylic paints and the myriad forms that they can assume. I have also dabbled in pencil, pastel, watercolor, and oil and find that the painting's subject often suggests the type of medium to use. My style ranges from realism and impressionism to surrealism on a variety of surfaces, and I paint both in the studio and "en plein air," thus creating a diverse portfolio--from warm landscapes to realistic portraits.
Spending most of my early years in Illinois, my husband and I relocated to west Tennessee for twenty years and then moved to Tallahassee, Florida upon retirement.
I am slowly getting to know my fellow Floridians, especially within the local artistic community through a wonderful acrylic class at my local senior center. My current hope is to begin showing my artwork in local venues in Florida, but to also thoroughly enjoy a new leisurely pace of life in retirement. I have the time to expand on my lifetime of knowledge and skill. Time to get to work. Thanks for stopping by . . .
